surface area...
.
.
.
.

i’ve been thinking lately about the physical ways in which surface area can be increased and how to apply those forces into my own everyday experiences. it seems to me that the greater coverage you have, that more possibilities become available to you for absorption (uptake). it avoids static moments…the trappings of a single medium. it gets at living and how the things you make are so much more than a record of a moment (snapshot)…blown/inflated, stretched, rolled, pushed/pulled. i find expansion.

surfaces also have different degrees of friction…often tipping the scales are grit and stick (distraction)…too much traction can limit progression. smooth, ground, glossy…these invite glide, skate, slide without adding mass (weight). movement disperses the point-bearing load...my dream is of a glabrous and amplified surface…receptive, reflective and interpretive. un-accesorized. naked. open. aware. familiar to all new things. digestive. surface area grows.

china mieville has a fantastical story about a creature called “the familiar” whose “feral fascination for things held it together…whose life was contagious…it compared everything it found to everything it knew. it’s power was change. it was tool-using. it had no way of knowing except to put to use. the world was infinite tools…”.

i think about how i know a glass and what it does. and then i think about the properties of the glass transferred to my self and have a whole new perspective.

chesteron, too, thought a lot about the ways in which we look at the world. a recent article in the new yorker about him quotes “all my life i have loved edges; and the boundary line that brings one thing sharply against another...all my life I have loved frames and limits; and i will maintain that the largest wilderness looks larger seen through a window.” my son had a recent epiphany while we sat in the newark airport...looking towards manhattan, he cupped his hands and said, "look, i can hold the whole city!" his views are galactic.

things we see everyday can be as alive and gigantic as our imaginations. there is a pure and simple delight in knowing things for what they are and allowing them to co-exist with illusion.

Hi! It's The Lemur over @ The Lemur Blog http://thelemurblog.blogspot.com/
Sunday July 27 is my birthday and I'm reaching out with this mass-created message to all 100-something blogs in my blogroll asking them to send me a nice birthday track! I would like a track to thelemurblog@hotmail.com by Sunday, when I will be posting all tracks in a nice mix - of course linking to the blogs by their respective tracks! Thanks in advance!

Yours sincerely, The Lemur

thanks for the comments...and if anyone has other ideas on how to expand surface area (i.e blown, stretched, rolled, etc.) i'd love to hear them...

I often find that by simply concentrating on limiting the amount of traction, whilst still maintaining the necessary levels of friction - acceptable expansion can be achieved.
