ALKA REX

Development is an intuitive process. The brain is somehow hooking into the math of rhythmic patterns, making us feel the motion in music. We are fairly certain that a lot of the 'funkiness' of a good funk band is paradoxically due to the performers not always being metronomically precise with their rhythms and accents and perhaps this mathematical basis could be extended even further. A playlist is a diagram, an incomplete set of instructions. It does not just play itself and draw the picture. It is more important to feel and imagine. In music a beat is not the equivalent of a mathematical point on a mathematical line. It has its own dimensions. No two beats are exactly alike. This inspiration is a random factor that morphs into personal branches of imagination.

preferred geometry...
.
.

.
.

...:::...there is a division of mathematics called topology that i have been reading about. people who work in this field try to explain things like why two objects, such as a donut and a coffee cup with a handle, are really the same (they call these abstract mathematical spaces 'manifolds')..."each has a single hole and can be manipulated to resemble the other without being torn or cut." and yet, while this malleability is possible, there is a 'preferred geometry' that manifolds take on...i think of it as a personality...

and even though they can take on different forms, there is an intrinsic desire for how they want to express themselves...how (or what) they want to be...(a piece of fabric draped over a mannequin may as well be the folds of the universe?)...

i've been thinking a lot about this idea of a 'preferred geometry'...(38-24-37) as it relates to creative forms...as things are made of materials and as to how they are conceived and perceived. i think it is the work of an artist to develop a dialogue with a medium (an open channel)...to be receptive to how an idea interfaces phenomenologically...for it to know what it wants to be and to understand that it may shift in time...it is only natural that things are not always clear in their direction: ambiguity is at the core of reason and emotion. desire is never static...:::...

CIO D'OR

a mix (or a track) starts, from the beginning, with an idea in my mind. i like the possibility that it could take a person on a wave of predetermined feeling. i am affected by a range of producers (100% vinyl for mix tools) and life. i’m drawn to things that catch my emotions and the way i perceive things are, for certain, not always the same. i prefer warm, melancholic or endlessness feelings with an authentic character and deepness. i like to stay within one feeling when making a mix or a track. it´s a little bit like telling a story.
sometimes a piece of material (that sounds very interesting to me) could be the beginning of an idea, too.

i build a mix (or a track) sometimes for many hours/days before i am happy with the end result. sometimes i miss a brick. i am always in evolution and movement. music is a “live study"!

i am not looking just for trends in music. for me, it is very important that i believe in a producer. that i can hear him. that he has something to say and to give and a way to involve the listener. i want to hear “soul” and “deepness” and “melancholy” and “trueness” on vinyl and in my own music productions and mixes. it can be a trend or it can be an old school pearl. i am just a filter of music and sounds.

my mixes and music have their own character because i have my own character. my music is just a snap shot of a moment in life. of how i feel and hear music. my vision for a crowd is to show them ideas from producers. i don’t play just for fun (even if i could). i want to give something. that is probably not always easy to understand and i know it. i think it is a big problem that so much of the media is always playing the same music. it doesn’t allow the ears of the consumers to progress.

MOCHIPET

There once was a lil dragon that came from Taiwan, he makes beats on the komputer all day and night long, till one day he say, "why not make a label in da bay?", and Daly City Records was born, like audio porn, mixed drinks with John Zorn, I think we can start something new; don't try to be cool, just make it come true, and magic will shing through. So here comes the hip hop that you didn't know was hip hop, its chinese and german, from oakland and switzerland, even south america, detroit's in the house. Just strange mochipet beats, from 02 to 08, like a ear full of treats, please welcome my friends Microphonepet will now begin..! Thank you: Salva and Epcot, Jahcoozi, Dopestyle, Pro The Leader, and Opio of Hieroglyphics Oakland, Hustle Heads, E da Boss & Bicasso of Living Legends, Sindri & Taiwankid, Raashan of Crown City Rockers and Mike Boo, Giant Elephant, Dubphonics, Khematic, Casual, and Humanbeings, 215 The Freshest Kids, Mykah9, oonceoonce and Eriksolo of Meanest Man Contest, RQM of Al Haca Soundsystem, Kutti MC and Evelinn Trouble, KFlay, Zaptap/Citizen, and Art Linkletters.

LANCE DE SARDI

Juxtaposition in music has always been one of the key factors drawing me to production and Djing. I love taking organic sounds and mixing them together with something totally un-organic and digital sounding. It usually has to do with using vocals to reinforce crazy sounds, but I went a little different route with this one. Acid lines have been one of the most textural parts of dance music since the 80’s, and I’ve always held strings and string arrangements as the most human and emotional of all real instruments, so I think this one works well to combine both of those textures and feelings into one.

‘Itch.’ all began with the acid line. I thought it was a great line to be repetitive through the whole track, so I built the string arrangement around that. The drums came last, and I kept them simple and old sounding, thinking that worked the best. I did another version with more electronic/minimal-style drums, and no crazy tom loop in the middle, but I didn’t think it worked as well. So I just stuck to the old school drums, and I think it’s better for it. I love the end result of the song being a hard, drum-driven stormer, but at the same time having an emotional content to it.

The process of doing this “Process” has been interesting for me, ‘cause I don’t really think about the existential aspects of making instrumental music. My process is usually get up, go to the gym, work in the studio for a bit, go skate, work some more, go to bed, repeat. But it’s getting me thinking about why things sound like they do, why it makes us feel a certain way, and why we like it that way. To quote the RZA: “We’re expressing our feelings, and we’re expressing our dark feelings. So his feelings may be deeper than mine, or my feelings may be deeper than his, but it’s all an expression of a feeling”...
