...:::... from 'the shape of content' by ben shahn:
the subconscious may greatly shape one's art; undoubtedly it does so. but the subconscious cannot create art. the very act of making is an intending one; thus to intend and at the same time relinquish intention is a hopeless contradiction, albeit one that is exhibited on every hand.
i've been thinking about how i come to know things and why it is i make. and then i turn that off and just get to making, and everything, with wonder & magic, changes....:::...

GUILLAUME SORGE
this selection was made in 20 minutes on traktor then edited on wavelab while my two kids (louis 6, gabin 3) were playing in the bath. this mix is made of slow/ambient/ childish/naive/sad songs + some kids choirs (i like the innocence of their voices as much as i like brian wilson's voice). the first part of the mix can work if your kids have trouble getting to sleep, the end is more about freaky/trippy/analogic stuff. i like the idea that the music you hear before falling asleep influences your dreams. i also think that music for children doesn't have to be always joyful (because life isn't). appearing in disorder : belbury poly, nobukazu takemura, jeremy dower, the focus group, yamasuki, nino nardini, michael andrews, tipsy and more stuff that i already can't remember...have a good night, guillermo (dirty sound system)

ERIC CLOUTIER
one of the most important things to me while creating a mix for mass online distribution is that its programming is as perfect as it can possibly be. i'm not the type of person to just grab 15 of the hottest new tracks and work them together. typically, i spend days, if not weeks, selecting and carefully dissecting the songs i will use for a set. its the thoughtful analysis of each and every track i own that allows me to go back through my memory banks and pull this information to create the same experience live that i do when creating a studio mix.
this new two hour set of mine was created out of necessity. not only was i long overdue for one, but i felt the need to remind people that everything people perceive to be "good" and "party-starting" doesn't have to be fast, glitchy, and melodramatic. sometimes the softest and slowest beats work a listener twice as well as the banger.
after a weekend to my home of detroit for the detroit electronic music festival, i was struck with inspiration stemming from one of my heroes, steve bug, and someone i've been dying to see for a long time, paco osuna. between the two of them, they rekindled a fire inside of me that needed to be relit, and, without even knowing it, brought to focus something that i have been struggling to get others to understand - slower bpm's, swirling vocals, and particular atmospherics enclose you in the music and make you one with the crowd around you and the dj you've come to enjoy. these coupled with particular track selection, careful and precise mixing, and a true connection with your audience will yield results not often seen anymore.

cultural amnesia...

...:::...i find myself off-kilter. accelerating into an unsteady and blind orbit. mostly, i just need to slow down. but pace aside, what i find much more disturbing is that many of these 'task-oriented' work habits have begun to trickle into other parts of my life. it's a little like traveling with the shade pulled on the plane window (you are either here or there but nowhere in between)...i've been missing content in context...
the urbanist thinker and writer jane jacobs wrote a collection of essays shortly before she died a year or two ago called the dark age ahead. in it, she posited that today’s society is so overwhelmed by digital information that the world faces the looming threat of slipping into cultural amnesia…of finding itself lost and disoriented in haven forgotten where it came from. detached from it’s past...
i wonder what that means for music, especially as mp3’s become more and more prevalent. i’d say my own listening habits have suffered from a kind of sonic attention deficit disorder. similar to michael gill’s process piece, there is an enormous amount of rapid-fire shuffling and discarding of information that goes on. so many songs are lost and found and re-lost. there are very few i find again outside a 2-week window of procurement. i think that is the very warning jacobs’ was trying to make in her book… that there is this attitude of disposability related to digital information and if that doesn’t shift soon, if we don’t find a way to make the binary tangible (at least in our thoughts about it), than we will have forgotten what it is that was worth remembering. there will be no guide, no precedent to launch from...
i was reading the liner notes (written by benny green) on an old ella fitzgerald album saturday night and this line grabbed my attention:
the truth is that such songs are more representative of the society that produced them than anybody, composers included, ever suspected at the time. if poets were the unacknowledged legislators of shelly’s world, then the songwriters have been the unacknowledged poets of our own. only the other day there was a letter which surfaced in a london salesroom, written by dylan thomas to his wife, in which he observed, with a perception beyond the capacity of most literary critics, “dance tunes are always right: i love you body and soul. i suppose soul means that i can hear you and see you and love you in every single, single thing in the whole world asleep or awake."...
i read that twice and it gave me hope despite the possibility of a darkness ahead. it gave me hope because i believe that love letters will still be written, that music will continue to reflect world orders and lonely hearts…that i can find friction in the things that bring me meaning, things that start with slow...:::...

APOTHICARE
the idea for this mix was to bring together tracks and sounds which represent for me the best way to explain why i love music.
music lets me travel in my head and takes me places in the world. i travel by travelling. this project has the intent to be smooth and invigorating...i kept the ball rolling until the end with this amazing track from gui boratto.
all the tracks in this mix we recently heard and reheard during after parties at the french music festival, nuits sonores. the objective during this time was to spend four days with people who shared similar musical interests and a vision of partying at this unique festival. it was a beautiful part of life.
