grasping....

...:::...i realize how much at i grasp at things sometimes...reaching out a clenched fist while trying to take hold of something. i forget how to open my fingers, knuckles hinged...locked into a habitual rigor mortis...
and in these times there is the image of a riverbank that persists...of struggling in the current to hold on to a root that grows out loosely there...it is only near exhaustion, when i finally choose to let go, that i realize i should have done this long ago. for suddenly i find myself full of breath and laughter and i am buoyant and still within all this movement and flow. i find a parallel velocity...and instead of a loud rushing, all i hear is a most beautiful sound all around...:::...

¡Modulando levemente!

Modulating Lightly!
Modulating lightly within the sensation that wonderful and nocturnal herb brings while sharing with friends in the paradise of sounds. Half-lidded eyes, smoke, vapors and wits!
I made this track while dreaming of this ideal situation.
Technique: I use for my performance attack and decay tools. They give elasticity and a variable intensity. I use this primarily for percussive sounds and other long sounds in which one pulse can run through the diverse forms of an entire fragment of audio.
muted modulation....

....:::...lately, i've been quietly transitioning my day-to-day. as projects move from design into production and documentation, they require very different frames of mind (and so different thoughts tangentially spiral off in the landscape of my head...creating different vistas and orientations, creating new ways of seeing things)...
i find the challenge is to maintain concept, even if it's form or detailing shifts...to hold the essence of an idea through the process of it's shaping (sometimes it wanders off and i have to track it down, following the soft imprint of it's footsteps where it lightly bent the grass)...
and if these tasks of mine were sounds, i think right now their modulations would be muted...not quite certain of the notes they are aiming to reach. and so i try a sound out softly at first...transitioning it around in my throat...turning a closed-lipped hum into an open-mouthed "o" noise. and i am happy with letting it float there right now. suspended, almost paused, it promises the most wonderful possibilities in this quiet place. because, i know that when i figure out, finally, how i should shape it into what it wants to be, that it will project a resonance that will ring and ring and ring with a most beautiful clarity..:::...download: 070420-modyfier part01

..download: four color zack's set1. Fela Kuti - Expensive Shit. I've been looking to set a mix off with Fela Kuti for a while now so it just seemed natural with some of the other tracks that I had lined up. It's so open ended and confident I just can't get enough of it. Its actually like 13 minutes long, all of which are amazing, but had to cut it short for the sake of the mix. Booooo....2. Eddie Kendricks - Date With The Rain. B-boys will tell you (especially northwest ones) that date with the rain is a classic. We have a great dancer night in seattle called Soul City, run by Circle of Fire and Massive Monkeys (two of Seattle's legendary break dancecrews). this is one track that still gets CONSISTENT play! It's a very meaningful song for those who get as much rain as we do.3. Eric B. & Rakim - Kick Along. I guess after the first two I kind of got in b-boy mode...had to keep it going for a bit with this one. I miss this kind of hip-hop.4. Bugz In The Attic - Booty La La. I know it's not their newest single or anything, (don't get me wrong, those new joints are really good too, especially "Move Aside" and "I'm Gonna Letcha"),but this one still has got me. It's such a good transition from funky drums to more dance floor patterns.5. Claude Vonstroke - The Whistler (Diplo Remix). I don't usually play much fresh-off-the-web heavy stuff (NOT a negative statement, just saying), cause for one I don't really stay as on top of it as I probably should, and also because I dont have any memories associated with most of it. I like a song to develop with age but this joint is ridiculously infectious! The whistles, the simple beat structure, had to include it!6. Matthew Herbert - The Audience. Whew this song is slick! Conceptual, jazzy, has stages...it's got a lot of positive ingredients. I hadnt played it in a while but wanted to bring it back to move in to some more jazzy house/2step stuff.7. Ty - Wait a Minute. When this 12" came out I was so happy with where music was going that I bought 4 copies!! the Dwele remix on the b side is good too but man that original... so sweet.8. The Bamboos - Tighten Up. There's a lot of good versions of "Tighten Up", but I loved the tempo change in this one. Plus there's a break in the track that is SOOOO mean.. its just insane. I actually used its break to blend over since it was a good exit point, but it is more than worthy of playing on its own.9. Barry White - Theme From Together Brothers. My dude DV One hit me with this one night when we were talking about goodblacksploitation soundtracks. He was all hyped with the sample at the end but come on ride the train??? yes!!!10. Don Cannon - Cannon Remix ft. Weezy. Ok yeah lets go there anyway... may as well go out on that too since its so unlike the rest of the tracks.
semantics of sound.....
.....:::...i've been wondering if single sounds hold meaning in the same way in which words do...that is, if there were a dictionary of sounds, would each modulation have a list of definitions and related forms? would there be a pronunciation key and accent marks? would there be sonic synonyms and antonyms, nouns, verbs and adverbs to stand with each entry? i think not...i wonder because, being the monolinguist that i am, i often find myself mis-interpreting what people say because i hold too much meaning in one word...and somehow, because music is more about associations and signifiers maybe (then it is about definitions per se...), it tends to hold itself in a more abstract way that is open to a broader interpretation...?or maybe (as tomas palermo suggests to me) it is the single notes and tones and utterances that are the structure of language themselves...and that without them, there would be no english or french, armenian or thai, cantonese or tajik or turkmen or uzbek or urdu or swahili...but maybe the semantics of sound are happily absent (in broken language...cracked over my knee like a stick)...blissfully meaningless in a mono-syllabic form...disassembled. for then sound is just a symbol without a system and can be re-arranged in any number of kaleidoscopic ways...sequenced and stacattoed and strung into a familiar phrasing, but free of context or bearing...:::...download: 070413-modyfier part01touane – potato nose : mar 2007 on lan music

..CLARKE CASSIDYI'm recording this mix in my glass house, day time, while a massive storm is pulsating outside. It's like being in a crowded club. Lots of movements in front of me, things to catch my attention, but I'm home alone.I decide to follow the violence / calm cycle of the elements as a guideline for the mix. Dark and deep clouds in a constant evolution for the mood, palms trees giving me the tempo, and the scream of the wind for the groove. Sometimes a solitary sun ray illuminates the world for a second...then the rain...I'm a soundtracker. I've always considered music as a soundtrack to my life, even before starting to make my own music. When playing in a club or bar, I love to look around and catch details from the people around, to play the right track, the right soundtrack for the moment...but I'm alone at home and I'm watching the trees dancing outside. This mix is dedicated to the Memory of Jean Baudrillard (1929 - 2007).01 - Ego Express - Aranda (Lawrence remix)

...:::...the past few weeks i have been traveling...unaccompanied by the sounds i so often choose to have around me. instead, i have been passively engaging the daily frequencies mexico has to offer...noticing the ways in which things in stillness become amplified in motion...the ways in with they interact...i begin to make a list of their sonic collisions, finding it so much more interesting to describe with verbs the ways in which things come together to release a sound...
...spray, slam, shut, place, drip, scrape, skid, hiss, flutter, bump, shudder, smack, splash, crack...
these are some of the happenings that gave off sounds...that sonically describe the materiality of place (does the sound of heels walking on concrete have a different pitch to it in one city then the next? or perhaps consider the sound of squealing brakes ricocheting between building faces)...i thought a lot about these things...about how the same action with the same materials can create dissimilar sounds in two separate places. why is that? i wondered. and listened. and wondered some more...and i think maybe it is that the materials of a place are culturalized through use...that they take on regional accents...and i also realized how accustomed i have become to hitting 'play' to shift my moods, to re-construct my daily environment...and i think i'll try to be more aware of how and when i listen...because while i love to create new sequences and patterns and motion by dressing myself up in sounds...i also want to know what makes a place a place...for how can i discern the nuances of the bus wires snapping overhead in san francisco or tires spinning out an a gravel in baja or vermont if i am shut into a neatly constructed audio-box...one that is beautiful but limiting...i think to really listen means taking in equal parts of passive and active selections...:::...download: 070406-modyfier part01
