...:::...sometimes, it is just a matter of listening…of how you choose to hear, how you choose to process information. everyone brings such a different history to sounds through their own personal experience: a certain attitude towards reception. i find in my own work more and more the urge towards simplicity. almost with an animal-like lunge. feral…to the extent that i hope to eliminate explanation. that ideas stand on their own. makerless. giving different kinds of meaning to different kinds of people.

experience-depending.

and in language, i think that learning meaning through experience attaches a feeling to words...provides an association. below, seven translations of one of samuel beckett's mirlitonnade's, gives a certain perspective and context to this thought:

...:::...perhaps it is because life can move so fast and be full of so much, that i am drawn to a more paired down sound to accompany me along my way. perhaps through association, these drawn out sounds help to reduce the excess in my everyday.

i have been thinking lately that there is an interesting relationship between ‘minimalism’ and ‘reductionism’. maybe the difference is in the actual making…where minimal is perhaps about creating through a simple addition and reduction is creating through subtraction? but while the end products of the two can become synonymous, they do not always have to be. it depends on a critical stopping point…in knowing that to add anything more will drown it in clutter or that to take anything more away will leave it hollow and dull…

but what i like thinking about the most is that moment of interface between minimalism and reductionism. it happens at a certain crux point, where they begin to look at one another…exchange glances…still adding, still subtracting...still constructing until they are eye-locked and staring…until grams of thought have been satisfactorily layered up and stripped away…until there is balanced some magnificent form that would lose all its beauty if tipped in either direction. slippery, beauty is...

i find these moments from time to time...poised on my tip-toes (sun-washed on a cloudy day) before i wobble and fall and begin to construct another one in another way for another day…:::...

in design, i think about this in the pragmatic terms of program and elements. remember those questions a few posts ago, “what does it do? how does it work?” (not, “what is it called”)? through creating situations and encouraging interaction, there is an activation of space that happens. outside of nouns (of form, of materiality, of tone, of beat, of function), outside of named things, outside of specifics…there is a resonance that is pre-reflexive. in music, from a micro-to-macro scale…the sequencing of note-to-note in a song in relationship to the sequencing of track-to-track in a set…there is a feeling that emerges beyond the shape of these words...i slip and slide around on that tilting plane in my socked-feet…falling gracefully, accompanied by sound...:::...
