engaging...

...:::...there is an importance in discrete moments. in each element having an integrity (not an indentity) of it's own. not possessive... just an essence, just a feeling, just a sensation of being. in these discretions, dialogues are created through interactions.

it's not our natures, but our habits that restrict us. through choosing engagement (...of materiality, pitch alteration, beat adjustment, speed, language, dimension, direction, stroke, form...) suggested changes can be revealed. testing, testing...:::...

homesick, revisited...
.

.
.
.
...:::...a few tracks included in today's download from two separate albums about our orientation in time. the first, a compilation out on broque titled pasture: the future of past (see max cavalera and cheslo below), all of which is available for free download on their site. the other, kode 9 + space ape's long awaited memories of the future on hyperdub.

inspired to 'change my listening habits' by deeptime's (formerly autonomic) review of memories of the future, i consequently also have been shifting the sequencing of my thoughts, and so creating new contexts for perception. in light of this idea of time (no longer linear or cyclical), a stanza from mary jo salter's poem, a phone call to the future:

Who says science fiction / is only set in the future? / After a while, the story that looks least / believable is the past. / The console television with three channels. / Black and white picture. Manual control: / the dial clicks when you turn it, like the oven. / You have to get up and walk somewhere to change things. / You have to leave the house to mail a letter.

and on restructuring our present condition by assuming a fictional past, gerry stern writes about his poem homesick:

My nostalgia is for the life I didn't live...The details (the images) are from the life I lived (and didn't live) during my journey. It is called 'my past'. The last sentence is what Maceo Pavlik-deNiord said when he was going on three, four years ago.

here are some excerpts. you can find it in it's entirety in this year's best american poetry (2006) :

I was reading again and French apples / were on my mind and oranges the way they sold them / in giant carts and how the skin was thick and / loosened from the flesh and how it made an / orange saucer where you placed the sections / after you pulled the threads away, the ugly word / pith, it's called, and raspberries with cream - / and how it would have been if I had stayed / in the same hotel another eight or ten years and / married someone else - it always come to / that - and taken up another trade, / for as you know what we call nostalgia / is for the life we didn't live, so much for / homesickness...

...I have nostalgia / for your life too, what are you, Mongolian? / Don't leave the rugs behind, milk the horses! / Are you Russian? You are great at this. / Light the samovar! I give you my past for / nothing. Here is your number. Line up, my lovers!

"m"-isms...
.
.
.
.
...:::...modernism has worn many faces. as it tends to reject tradition, it's only natural that one period should uproot the next. in a sense, it's tradition is to change.

a consistent manifesto of modernism has been to embrace technology and accept it as a thing that is permanent, beautiful and changing. initially 'avant-garde' and elite, it exploded as a movement in the first two decades of the twentieth century but was not ingrained into popular culture until the 1930's when mass production allowed the public to full-heartedly embrace technological advances. this is recognized in the public adaptations of politics, the sciences, philosophy, architecture, and the arts.

marxism and darwinsm in the late 1800's laid the foundation for modernism to launch from. they freed society from religion by paving the way for secularism, by introducing systems and structure, rather than believing in assumed conditions.

they gave clues to discrete moments.

the changes that were brought on by the industrial revolution elevated the opposing ideologies of modernism and romanticsm. the latter was rooted in an intangible nostalgia and a fear (rejection) of the rapid change that was happening all around. opposingly, modernism embraced this change and sought ways to integrate and embody the momentum of social and technological progress.

perhaps one of the most familiar (and earlier) examples is in the work of abstract painters who (following the lead of the impressionists before them) abandoned representation of the natural world and instead began exploring with color, shape and light and re-structuring perspective. similarly, electronic music parallels this exploration in sound. there is a certain primitivism in rhythm that underlies all technological possibilities (de-construct the sound of a heartbeat) and so maintains a human relation. the broad range of texture and tonality is sill rooted in a rhythmic structure. confined to an aural medium. it is within those constraints that it finds its freedom and newness. grabbing what is possible now. knowing that more is soon to follow.

noise-germ...
.
.
.
.
...:::...more and more i think about this dialogue between feeling and understanding in sound. i've been reading sporadically from audio culture: readings in modern music. one particular essay by henry cowell jumps out titled, the joy of noise. he writes:

"Music and noise, according to a time honored axiom, are opposites. If a reviewer writes, 'It is not music, but nosie," he feels that all necessary comment has been made...

Since the 'disease' of noise permeates all music, the only hopeful course is to consider that the noise-germ, like the bacteria of cheese, is a good microbe, which may provide previously hidden delights to the listener, instead of producing musical oblivion...

Although existing in all music, the noise-element has been to music as sex to humanity, essential to its existence, but impolite to mention, something to be cloaked by ignorance and silence. Hence the use of noise in music has been largely unconscious and undiscussed. Perhaps this is why it has not been developed, like the more talked-of elements, such as harmony and melody..."

i love this idea of a 'noise-germ'. a rampant meme. running wild as our culturally-tuned ears work to sift meaning from sounds. and as noises are not always translatable (not always sourced) understanding morphs into feeling. and there is a wonderful freedom in falling into an obtuse-zone. so much of electronic music references this abstracted state with those wordless sounds. with noise. john cage writes:

"Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating. The sound of a truck at fifty miles per hour. Static between the stations. Rain. We want to capture and control these sounds, to use them not as sound effects but as musical instruments..."

this music, however, seeks simulation perhaps only as a starting point, as a reference to begin from. when done well, it becomes a simulacrum...no longer needing a model or a source to reference but can stand on its own as an evolved copy.

onomatopoeias...
.
.
.
.
...:::...i think, maybe, that it is the abstraction of unknown, unsourced sounds and the occasional intervention of describable ones that interests me most about electronic music. lacking a vocabulary for certain sounds, the ubiquitous terms such as "clicks" and "cuts" and "bleeps" and "blips" seem to have become a saturated standard in referring to the modulations found in this music...onomatopeias floating...from wiki:

In rhetoric, linguistics and poetry, onomatopoeia is a figure of speech that employs a word, or occasionally, a grouping of words, that imitates the sound it is describing, and thus suggests its source object, such as "bang" or "click", or animal such as "moo", "quack" or "meow".

and yet for all these sounds, which these words may begin to descirbe, there rarely is an actual object that is striking the noise: the source object. they are found abstracted in space and in reception. incommunicable and cause-less...lost and found in a binary dialogue, creating a beautiful friction...

the last two track in today's download are from luomo's (johanna ilvanainen, antye greie-fuchs and vladislav delay) forthcoming album on huume, titled paper tigers. it's due out on october 24th. if you like it, be sure to buy it when it's released...and in the meantime, for all you hungry little beasties...:::...
