...:::...when is it natural to construct...to show the made-ness of a thing...whether an object, a building, a piece of clothing, a painting, a sound...? so often materials try to mimick or simulate some other thing rather than being true to their own inherent qualities. i have been trying to clarify what it means to apply certain materials in specific contexts, and also how to reveal that material's characteristics...its weight, its thickness, its texture, its color, its dimension, its length, its fullness, its pitch, its digitalness, its mechanics...the idea gets broad in terminology when it steps across different fields, but the concept stays rooted in curiosity. the paintings of american born artist robert ryman are a good example of a body of work that explores the materiality of paint with one color. look closely and there is so much going on. a scratch here or a mark there or a shift in tonality shows the depth and possibilities of a single medium. all it takes is acting on it to open it up into multiplicities...:::...

...:::... i've been minimizing the heavy things, the physical things...the closet accumulation, the old t-shirts, the unorganized tools, the scraps of wood, the unknown zone below the bed, behind the boxes, the dusty lights, the dirty walls, old ripped sheets, the mineral-caked shower head, the tub drain, the pantry shelves, the back of the refridgerator, the miles of extension and speaker cords, random wires, broken casette players, salvaged xerox machines and laminators, the grease-streaked stove top, the slot between the counter and the cupboards where things always fall, the placing and organizing and purging of stacks of books and records and cd's...and in all this, it has made me wonder...at what point do these things become objects rather than information and at what magic number does junk turn into a collection? i've been exploring that relationship...but mostly creating space, letting go, lightly floating...untethered into and out of quiet week-ends. here are some tracks that have accompanied me...:::....

...:::...for those of you who missed it, grigori perelman, a russian mathematician, was awarded the fields medal this past august for his work on the poincare conjecture, and declined to either accept the award, or appear publicly to make a statement. a few years prior to this, he was quoted as saying, "I do not think anything that I say can be of the slightest public interest. I am not saying that because I value my privacy, or that I am doing anything I want to hide. There are no top-secret projects going on here. I just believe the public has no interest in me."

the conjecture, proposed by henri poincare in 1904, has been the most famous open problem in topology (qualitative questions about geometrical structures). "Loosely speaking, the conjecture surmises that if a closed three-dimensional manifold is sufficiently like a sphere in that each loop in the manifold can be tightened to a point, then it is really just a three-dimensional sphere. The analogous result has been known to be true in higher dimensions for some time, however the case of three-manifolds has turned out to be the hardest of them all, roughly speaking because in topologically manipulating a three-manifold, there are too few dimensions to move "problematical regions" out of the way without interfering with something else."

perelman proposed a solution in 2002 by posting a series of eprints. over the course of the last four years, he has withdrawn from mathematics. "According to various sources, in the spring of 2003, Perelman suffered a bitter personal blow when the faculty of the Steklov Institute allegedly declined to re-elect him as a member, apparently in part out of continuing doubt over his claims regarding the geometrization conjecture. His friends are said to have stated that he currently finds mathematics a painful topic to discuss; some even say that he has abandoned mathematics entirely.
