summarized selections...
.
.
.
.
1. a new freeform five remix of alice smith's love end was sent by world's fair. her new record is out september 5th on bbe. i am also told that she has a remix by maurice fulton in the works. have a listen. i found it to be a big full floating sound that rolls me around.

alice smith - love end (freeform five remix)

2. in other thoughts, i hadn’t heard or seen this collaboration between alton miller and boddhi satva anywhere until now. time and place dependent. maybe i just kept leaning over to tie my shoe at the wrong moment.

3. berg nixon (aka ryan crosson) will be performing july 22 as part of the bushwickartproject. and here are two tracks, the first a remix of that ubiquitous 25 bitches, but somehow, this one seemed to be more evasive than the heartthrob or marc houle versions.

locating epicenters...
.
.
.
.
...:::...i began last time about navigating sound. what i meant was following a vibration to where the movement begins. finding the epicenter that radiates with exponential forces, reaching desperately for your ears, even if you aren't listening. piercing your lobes, you might wear it like jewelry. it can make you beautiful with its unexpected accessorizing.

and what when you don’t hear? do you think that environments actually become more spatial? that you can begin to feel where a sound comes from? a certain vibration might mean the padded foot of a dog walking by or the a wind on your check, a wing flapping. what is our relationship between sound and movement or sound and visualization? and can a sound exist without meaning? without form? without it being something?

one of my favorite movies that wanders in sound (you know, like whales suspended in artic oceans, where water is clearer than air) is wim wender's 1994 film lisbon story. here is a blurb from his website about it:

"Dear Phil, I cannot continue m.o.s.! -- S.O.S.! -- Come to Lisbon with all your stuff a.s.a.p.! Big hug, Fritz."

Who is who? And what do all those abbreviations mean? The SOS of course, is obvious, and a.s.a.p. only strengthens the urgency: come AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. But m.o.s.?

Only if you work in movies you might know that M.O.S. is an old and rather strange word for "silent," and that the expression came up in the late twenties meaning "mit-out sound."

Anyway, we soon understand that the postcard was sent by a film director, Friedrich Monroe, to his friend Phillip Winter, a sound engineer. Friedrich has started a movie in Lisbon on a very romantic notion -- he wanted to do it "as if the whole history of cinema hadn't happened, shooting all on his own, a man alone in the streets, with an old hand-cranking camera, just like Buster Keaton in THE CAMERAMAN."

Well, Friedrich failed, and when he realized he had painted himself into a corner, he called Winter for help, hoping "that your microphones could pull my images out of their darkness, that sound could save the day." ...::::...

navigating sound...
.
.
.
.
...:::...i have been thinking about how relationships to sound are traversed in life. the other day: about how moving so much of the time with earphones on, when i stop to take them off, how much more i actually am here and hear. it somehow elevates ambient daily noise from background sound to separate noises...the bus lines snapping over head (such a specific san francisco noise), a pigeon limping, a newspaper page turning, coffee falling into a cup...and then also straining for that elusive silence…

on another note:

i really enjoyed the post about john foxx’s new work, tiny colour movies, over at k-punk. i think mostly about how a process-based idea came out of a response to someone else's found images. continuing deferral. i think mark’s right about visuals haunting. it gets even more interesting when personal images belonging to a stranger still remain so even in their detachment...possesive of the viewer. captivating.

i often don't take photos of places or people that i want to remember for the very reason of wanting to avoid tricking memory. i'd rather avoid how the photo says it's supposed to be and interpret with rememberance. with those human perceptions on the trigger-finger. john berger's ways of seeing or another way of telling are prime examples of exploring this thematically.

so it's interesting that foxx remembers some other lost and found memory and evolves it in his new work. capturing enough distance between today and yesterday to acknowledge that space with sound. music can be midnight tolling. that ample ring, creating a separation, a ground to push from, spring up...:::..

on nostalgia vs remembrance...
.
.
.
.
...:::...nostalgia is something that i have thought alot about...especially being a transplant from the east coast to the west...where finally it feels like home. don't get me wrong, i enjoy remembrance, but nostalgia? that is another thing altogether as i don't feel the urge to re-create a feeling i might have once had there...nostalgia is slippery. it always leaves you wanting, where as remembering can be extremely fulfilling. one of my favorite books that tackles the subject is ignorance by milan kundera ...it breaches the subject where when you have to leave a place, there is an expectation that you would want to go back when you finally can....whereas if you leave a place by choice, no one has the same sort of expectations of you ever returning...if you haven't, go read it...i need a new book (novel) right now. any recommendations?

and for the music, as before, i don't know what is going on with the uploads. all i can say is that some files seem to be more tempermental than others. for those tracks without the "mp3" extension, well, you should know what to do by now (but if not...just add it on at the end). thanks for your patience...:::...

what's for dinner...

...:::...because so much music gets written about and reviewed with or without authority in the vast blogosphere, i've tried here to relieve it from the more factual and analytical ties. i'm more interested in how the tracks infuse the everyday...in how they are experiential. what i'm eating for dinner today. i'm not giving away the recipes, but i hope you enjoy the food. don't forget to add ".mp3" to the file. the extensions are still dropping from the uploads...:::...

background sound...
.
.

.
.
...:::...degrees of separation lead me from one artist to the next through varying projects (who worked with who worked with who)...it's interesting how some combinations of talent are more combustible than others...funny sometimes when too much capability mixes into one recipe how it can be overwhelmed by flavor. over salted. but today's selections don't necessarily reflect that. just in wondering and wandering...::..

vanishing point (1971)...
.

.
.
.

...:::...there is something about the sense of time in the movie vanishing point, that not only creates space, but makes place, too. it shows this by slowly elapsing from a car either moving into the distance or coming out of it, to a stillness at the end where you, the viewer, is paced with the car so that the landscape becomes the thing that is moving.

you are reeled in through fantastic velocities, super soul, and a good old fashioned show of freedom...and you fall for the protagonist, kowalski. a former race car driver trying to make it from denver to san francisco in fifteen hours. you get to know him through expansive shots of i-80 in the 1970's, when it was still a two-lane road and the towns and back country shacks and christian soul revivals and old, toothless snake catchers and naked chicks on bikes in the desert were the expected. all these characters and places have a slowness...have faces and personalities unlike the homogenous chains of fast food restaurants and mogul gas stations that monopolize the vascular on and off ramps of today. these places were part of the fabric...woven tightly to the road, grown like barnacles, exhaling a strange breath. all of these elements are beautifully connected in the movie, floating along on a morally developed narrative as broadcast by super soul. check it out...:::...
.
.
...:::...please note: some of the file extensions seem to be dropping off when sent by ysi...just add ".mp3" to the file if this happens and it should work fine...in the meantime, i'll investigate. sorry for the temporary inconvenience...:::...

one more important thing...
.
.
as many of you may know, square productions is making a movie called speaking in code. a blurb from their website about it:

SiC is not a film about why techno is so cool and contemporary. SiC is not a movie about superstar DJs, backstage access and partying. Most importantly, SiC is not a lesson in why techno and trance is so essential and life-givingly superb.

What Speaking in Code is about is people. Extraordinary people who make their way in the world independently. Or a network of producers, promoters and musicians who are quite human. Most people think techno documentary and they think hype, clubs and outrageous camera angles. Well, that’s not SiC. The film is wonderfully shot with a steady hand and the characters we have been following deserve the attention because they are steady and simple, not garish and silly.

to continue working on this movie they need $$$. you can contribute on their website and get your name included in the credits. but aside from that self-indulgent reason, you should do so anyway because you care about the music and where it comes from.

more than anything about what this movie will be one day, i've appreciated that they opened up the process to be documented itself by viewers. where so much seems to be about end results, the finished thing, the product...little is it sometimes realized that the way things happen in the making is the most enjoyable, frustrating, ecstatic, focused, happy moments. what has been shown so far shows how human all this electronic sound is.

dub-volution...
.
.

.
.

...:::...this is a simple, personal history of how sound grew for me...of what has tuned my ear and life-style (i wonder sometimes whether these things
are synonomous, or rather, what their relationship might be...especially from a design standpoint. for example, how do you create neighborhood? i think there are two channels of development here...the first being, through programming function and establishing design guidelines. this is the more conventional and practiced way. the second being through creating activity. i am more intersted in how spaces erupt from stir, from use, from events, and from....say, music....and i'm interested in how diversity is created within that group. i think that where/when music creates space (environment from thought...check out bakhtin), that the space then absorbs people.) perhaps because reggae has voice, i think that listening to it was at first much easier on my un-developed electronic ear. there is a human context that allowed me to fall into it....and darwin had his way with natural selection from there...for after i was hooked on that sound, it easily segued into dub. dub into house. house into techno. techno into whatever genrification is alive these days. i can't keep up. but dub was the petri-dish....and for me, it grew amazing and unexpected cultures. here is a sampling of that pool...:::...
