...:::...something i've been thinking about lately...how i listen...as much as i might like to make it in motion, it is mostly while working...there are other ways, too. this is called 'mute room' by thom faulders and was part of an exhibit commissioned by the wattis institute in 2001 called 'rooms for listening'...as a room-sized device for listening to experimental electronic music, a contour of the foam's surface operates as a sound baffle to enhance acoustical clarity. similar to the way that musical notes 'decay' in the air before dissipating, this surface has a transitory quality - impressions linger until fully erased by the slowly acting foam.

...:::...i've been practicing observation. today: morning coffee in one hand, digging for a moment (how long is a moment? composer bernhard gunter wrote about it: i have often found that listeners believed a shorter piece to last longer than an actually longer one, and that their estimates of the duration of a work were often quite far from the actual chronological one...research has found that our perception of 'present', 'now', 'the present moment' is a time window of about three seconds; everything else is memory or anticipation...) before going into work at the corner of 2nd and howard. leaning against the store front window at street level...vibrations through my shoulder blades where they touch the glass...picked up from cars stop and go at the changing light. a pigeon across the street, pistoning it's head to create a broader cone of vision (peripheral eyesight extended through motion)...

...and movement creates space…sets up boundaries, finds edge conditions. it allows exploration to evolve into navigation, where an endless combination of situations and circumstances occur without stagnation (a stalled pen blotting ink where its tip is held unmoving against the paper), where proportions are defined through direct bodily relationships (how far do you move your hand to make a line, write a sentence...move the emotioanal into the physical?) it seems most times that without motion, there would be no future...just a quiet line with no direction, with no bearing, with no context....here are some sounds to add friction, to be your metronome...your neighbor, to light you up and cast your shadow...:::...

i am wandering in strange places…lost in obsessive and repetitive drawings. sometimes i break through the making of it and find some other thought, some other meaning, some other substance. but for now, i am drowning in the cramping of my hand. it draws the same line again and again and again. when i am kinder to myself, i see the lines are not all the same…just made with the same intention. they take on their own personalities in their imperfections and begin to interact. staged. and it seems that music in its narrative of notes, strung together from one to the next, is very much about that repetition, about creating a solo sound to cycle around itself and create an environment. like in the belly of a whale. or perhaps a single note in a silo, circling (who was that artist?). moving and mutating into a new sound. so similar to what i dreamt once: a silo filled with water. i floated at the top in total suspension. water clearer than air. i am a dreamer, I know, and when i remember...how amazing!

transubstantiation...
.
.
.
.
it surprised me recently when i realized how many tracks i listen to first as remixes before actually hearing the original. it’s probably mostly because i get around late to things that they’ve already had a chance to emerge from the chrysalis again and again and again…but it also seems a way to re-dress an idea without having to conjure up the graceful body. it already has its skeletal structure, calcium-enriched. tailoring new sounds to fall around shoulders or slide off curving hips with all just the right moments is only a matter of modification…and whether it gets deconstructed or frilled-out, the body maintains a kinetic memory. it knows how to move, no matter what it is wearing. it’s just that sometimes it can be more challenged. so it takes context. putting on sandals to walk down an icy street won’t get you very far very fast, but it could be interesting. you never know who you might slide into. that’s what i love so much about the remix. so when i hear the original after having heard tracks that have been re-worked, it’s like materializing apparitions. i know its ghostly face, familiarly…like transubstantiation.

i saw the piece above at the recent cca (california college of arts) industrial design and furniture graduate show...this was the one piece that i couldn't keep my eyes off...it's by yvonne mouser and she writes about it: "the persistent flux of time is most visible at the intersection of order and chaos, where moments of reality and memory collide unexpectedly. from this transitional space, creativity emerges from questions and inconsistencies between events."

there is a word for the "in-between" as it refers to space...the japanese term for it is "ma", another idea that applies is "picnoleptic"...it's about knowing the before and the after, but not the middle...and it's about how we cushion this by creating events that link the two together...almost synaptically. i've been trying to listen to the space in-between sounds lately...so listening to the quiet, the pause, rather than the filler...the figure-ground of sound.

i’ve been thinking a lot about how music comes to me, the ebb and flow of sounds and then i was thinking about palimpsests…about the happy medium between creation and erasure (yes, it was a beach day), about redefining lines, edges…and then i was reading an essay by pauline oliveros about remembering how to listen, about listening so hard for things that ear wax melted. and i suppose mostly, since i have started posting music, i have been thinking about audience and reception and anonymity. i have been thinking about the ways in which i acquire tracks, which is primarily through downloading from other blogs and open information sharing. and the thing i perhaps love most is the hop-scotch effect of finding things that are new to me that came out years ago as well as things that have yet to be released…time wrinkles. and most of all i realize that music, for me, is not about being ahead of the curve (about knowing all of tomorrow’s releases yesterday)…but enjoying the singular perspective. i cherish my naivete:::unguided, free-form exploration.

“…for cage’s sensibilities, the release of control was spiritual and ethical, even a political, imperative; one that led him to abdicate the role of composer in order to become an improviser and collaborator. ‘when you get right down to it,’ cage said, ‘a composer is simply someone who tells other people what to do. i’d like our activities to be more social – and anarchically so.’” – christopher cox

"musicians and composers both high brow and pop have fiddled and tweaked electronic and electrical instruments as well as electromagnetic recording and broadcasting technologies in order to tune into sonic compositional and expressive possibilities. in doing so, they have also gone a long way toward re-imagining the scrambled boundaries of subjectivity as it makes its way through the invisible landscapes - both dreadful and sublime - that make up the acoustic space of electronic media." - from recording angels by erik davis

“i don’t believe in copyright. i think everything should be free. i don’t believe in someone owning a group of notes. if someone stole something that i said i’d written, well, i probably didn’t write it anyway. i probably subconsciously transferred it from another memory or another time. i would never sue someone over a sample or even an entire piece of music. it’s different when you consider yourself a composer and you think everything springs from your mind – you’re using a tired sort of system to do it, where the piano is your instrument, and your mind is the conductor. you’re creating composition. people who think that way would be very upset if someone stole an entire piece of music." – bill laswell (above)
.
.
there is a theory that cultural information hopscotches from one mind to another...allowing natural selection to infulence with its vice grips screwed tightly to the temples. it is called a meme. it applies to those expressions that make us human: theories, music, dance, practice, etc. bill laswell knuckle punches this concept straight in the face as it applies to the world of mp3's and file sharing. since when did sharing become a dirty word?

mainstream me

for all of us out there who aren’t dj’s and enjoy listening to electronic music, the “blogosphere” offers transatlantic flights at affordable prices…sometimes even offering complimentary warm towels with tongs…so soothing.

for the most part, the house / minimal / micro / italo-disco / techno / what-have-you music that is played out and about town is anonymous to most people. it’s not like other genres of more mainstream music where a song can be heard on the radio or tv, built-up, and then exploded in a club and everybody gets down because they know it, because it’s already got that recognizable "nowness" attached to it. unless you are actively looking for the source of the sound, it‘s most likely going to float you by…one unknown step after another. and the dj’s don’t help. not that it’s their fault, really, but there is little opportunity for them to promote the artists other than to play them over and over and over and over (the smell of repetition really is on you) until the tune catches. i thought this photo and comment that philip sherburne posted on his blog a few months ago a nice counterpoint and relevant to the train of thought:

“The Wighnomys' Monkey Maffia always does this, holding up the sleeve of the record that's playing. I like the fact he's giving love back to the artists, and not trying to keep his selections some kind of secret. “ -ps

so, where does one like me who has a hankering to hear such things above ground go?…to bring those subterannean, dirty, dark and deep sounds into the light, into say, a sober sunday morning? why, the irresistibly tangential world wide web or course.

i get educated.

i read reviews and histories and geek out on not only what music is out there, but on how it is made…even if I don’t understand it all. i google, browse, select, download, listen, google again, side step to related topics, google, download, read, read, listen. sometimes i wonder why i bother, but in the end, it’s mostly because i can’t keep away. and the stream of babble has started to become translatable. the code is cracking.

i had the pleasure to hear john maeda (he has pioneered the use of the computer for people of all ages and skills to create art, and is currently spearheading a new research initiative to "redesign technology" so that it consistently makes sense, is fun, and keeps us coming back for more) lecture a few years back. he spoke about wearing out computers through what he termed, “binary friction”. this would be where so many 0’s and 1’s are flying each other by, that they build up a resistance and eventually give computers aneurysms. i have a feeling that with enough run time, with enough listening, i may just begin to feel the holes in my head (i think they call them ears) turning sound into a language. this music is not so elusive once you start looking for it. the community of people devoted to it is so strong that information is easily linked up (for example, just look at the overlap of links on any number of blog sidebars). it's just not blasting you like an air conditioner on a 92-degrees-in-the-shade kind of day.

depeche mode - enjoy the silence (ewan pearson extended mix)
